Are Clark County Court Records Public?

Yes. Court records in Clark County are public records and are generally accessible for inspection and copying under the Nevada Public Records Law (NRS Chapter 239). However, certain records are presumptively confidential or restricted by law, meaning they are automatically closed to the public and typically require a court order to access for non-parties to the record. These records include

What Information is Available in Clark County Court Records?

Accessing court records in Clark County can be done through three primary methods listed below.

Researchers can search for court records online from the District Court, Justice Courts, and Municipal Courts through their respective case search portals below.

  • Each portal allows users to search for court records by party name or case number and provides varying levels of access to case information. Researchers should note that confidential records are generally not accessible through online case search tools.

    In-Person Access

    Individuals can also access Clark County court records in person by visiting the appropriate courthouse during business hours. Some courthouses have public terminals where visitors can search for court records for free. Inquirers may also speak with court staff to help provide the record if the specific courthouse does not have a public terminal or copies of the record are needed. To avoid search fees, requesters should provide the case number when making a request. If the case number is not available, then the full names of the parties involved in the case and the year the case was filed may be presented.

    Mail and Phone Requests

    Individuals who want to obtain copies of a court record but would rather not visit the court may make the request by mail. For District Court records, requesters may complete any of the following forms below based on the nature of their request and email or mail it to the Records Division.

    For other courts, requesters may put their request in writing and mail it to the Clerk’s Office. The desired record should be clearly described, and the written request should include a self-addressed stamped envelope so the record can be returned.

    Fees for Court Records in Clark County

    Viewing court records via online portals or inspecting digitized copies at the courthouse is typically free. However, the courts usually charge a fee for the reproduction of records when copies are requested. Most divisions use a standardized fee for court records, as seen below.

    • Search fee for records prior to 1990: 50 cents
    • Photocopies: 50 cents per page
    • Certification of copies: $3 per document in addition to copy costs for documents produced at the time by the court, and $5 for documents brought for certification by the requester
    • Exemplification of copies: $6 per document for documents produced at the time by the court, and $9 for documents supplied by the requester
    • JAVS video recordings: $25 per CD

    Criminal Records Access in Clark County

    Clark County criminal records contain details about a person’s interaction with the county’s criminal justice system. An interaction usually begins at the point of arrest, then to the courts, and to prison if convicted and sentenced. Arrest records are created and managed by the arresting agency (e.g., the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department) and the Nevada Central Repository for Nevada Central Repository for Nevada Records of Criminal History at the state level.

    Beyond issuing departmental arrest records, the Nevada Central Repository for Nevada Records of Criminal History provides comprehensive criminal history reports. These reports provide a more thorough account of an individual’s legal profile, including custodial arrests and any subsequent criminal convictions within the state. Individuals may seek a copy of their criminal history by submitting their fingerprints to the repository along with a written request.

    For criminal court records, members of the public may gain access through the various court case search portals or visit the court where the case was filed.

    Clark County Probate Records

    Clark County probate records are documents that detail the judicial procedure of settling a deceased person’s (decedent’s) estate. They are public records, so anyone can access them to verify family connections, distribution plans, asset inventories, guardianships, and conservatorships. However, like other court records, sensitive personal identifiers, like social security numbers, are generally redacted.

    The Clark County District Court, specifically the Probate Department, handles probate cases in the county. Inquirers who want to access a record remotely may search the District Court Case Lookup portal using the case number or party name on the record.

    To access records in person, which also allows for copies to be obtained, individuals may visit the District Court Clerk’s Office at the Regional Center, provide the name or case number, and pay the required fees. Plain copies cost 50 cents/ page, while certified copies cost an extra $3.

    Clark County Family Court Records

    Family court records in Clark County are documents related to legal matters involving domestic relations and the welfare of children. Examples of children include marriage dissolution, domestic violence, paternity, and the protection of minors.

    Family Court court records are public records; however, certain cases, such as paternity and adoption matters, are not public. The most convenient way to access a family court record is through the District Court Case Lookup portal. However, users cannot obtain copies of a record or view confidential cases on the portal. For such purposes, individuals will have to access the record in person at the courthouse.

    Federal Court Records in Clark County

    Federal court cases in Clark County are handled by the U.S District Court, District Court of Nevada. These records are different from county-level records and cannot be accessed through local search tools or at the courthouses. Federal case records can be accessed using the Public Access to Court Electronic Records (PACER) tool, on public terminals at the courthouse, or by requesting them at the Clerk of Court’s Office.
